I discovered that Rejane’s mother had written the following words years ago:
‘It was worth it, this time away from home. But, whenever you find yourself in this situation again, you will be fine. You can read the letters; they are like a book I’ve written for you – ‘How to look after a daughter from a distance.’
This reminded of John Donne’s reflection;
‘…All mankind is of one author, and is one volume; when one man dies, one chapter is not torn out of the book, but translated into a better language…’ (Meditation XVII – No Man is an Island).
This inspired me to create a sculptural book form for the focal point of the performance, representing an unfolding timeline, a primal space of longing and belonging.
